Buchanan Hall is named after Harry E. Buchanan. Buchanan was born in Sylva, North Carolina and grew up in Jackson County. At the age of 17, Buchanan opened a motion picture theatre in Sylva. Later he would organize and become president of the Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club and serve as town Mayor. One of his major influences locally and particularly to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians was his leadership in establishing the outdoor drama, Unto These Hills.
