Malik Pratt is a Drummer, Percussionist, Educator, and Producer living in Asheville, North Carolina. His primary instrument is drum set, but he also has a background in orchestral percussion and marching percussion. He has his bachelor’s degree in music education from Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ. He also has a master’s degree in jazz performance from the University of South Carolina. Once he reached high school, he began to dive into the percussion family. This is where he began doing marching band and orchestral percussion. He continued this and decided to become a music major in 2018. As he began playing more music his love for jazz flourished. In 2020 he decided to pursue his master’s in jazz studies. This led to him performing at jazz jams and playing several gigs. He also had the opportunity to host his own jazz jam. As well as joining several Western Carolina Jazz ensembles, he also joined several different ensembles at the University of South Carolina. Jazz Band, jazz combo, Commercial music ensemble, and steel pan band just to name a few. He has performed with musicians such as Mimi Jones, Vijay Iyer, and Micheal Dease. Through the guidance of his mentor Dr. Colleen Clark, Malik has been able to push his drumming to new heights. Malik’s goals are to inform students of the musicality of drum set and percussion; to encourage creativity and higher-order thinking in a way that increases student performance, while also growing as a musician through hard work and determination.
