In this photograph a diverse crowd of men, women, and children pose in front of the Yankee Hipps Hotel in Clyde, N.C. According to Haywood Homes and History (p. 78), L.P. Hipps of New York built the hotel in 1900 close to the town’s railroad depot. While not visible in this photograph, Haywood Homes includes a picture of the hotel’s full exterior and notes that it had a Mansard roof. The handwritten caption on the front of the picture reads, “Yankee Hipps Hotel (1901). Was at one time owned by the Baptist Association.” The photograph was hand-dated on the back July 22, 1901.
