Even as automobiles allowed communities to coalesce resources, as in school consolidation, many maintained individual identities into the 1920s. For instance, the August 10, 1926, issue of The Ruralite (Sylva, N.C.) ran an article titled “Sells Store at Addie.” The article announced that William Houston Snyder (1881 – 1956), also known as Hute, had sold his stock of general merchandise to his brother, George C. Snyder (1880 - 1956), who operated a store in the Beta community. Both Hute Snyder and George Snyder died in 1956 and both of their obituaries referred to their merchant activities and, respectively, to the Addie and Beta communities.
